Sungazer
Smaug giganteus

- Range
- Well-documented South African populations occur chiefly in the Free State, with smaller populations in southwestern Mpumalanga and western KwaZulu-Natal. SANBI describes South African endemism, while The Reptile Database additionally lists Lesotho; that country-level discrepancy is unresolved.
- Habitat
- A terrestrial lizard of Highveld grassland, occupying self-dug or available burrows in flat or gently sloping ground.
Facts
- Heavy spiny scales and an armored tail help protect it; an alarmed animal can retreat to its burrow.
