Range

Most of Europe, western North Asia and parts of northwestern Africa; introduced in parts of Ireland.

Habitat

Forests, wet woodland, open countryside, fields, copses, parks and gardens; sometimes in dry areas far from standing water.

Diet

Invertebrates and, occasionally, small mice.

Facts

• A common toad can return to the pond where it was spawned. More than 80% of marked males in one study returned to their original breeding pond, using smell, magnetic cues and visual information to navigate.
